“Nothing About Us Without Us!” – Moving Away From Criminalisation Of Addiction

Thursday, October 30th, 2014

It has been impossible, today, to ignore the important findings of a recent Home Office report, which compared the UK’s approach to drug misuse with that of 13 other countries and concluded that there is no evidence that the criminalisation of drug use leads to a reduction in the problem. See, for example, http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-29824764. In […]

Self-licensing: A Route to Addiction

Wednesday, September 5th, 2012

A couple of weeks ago (16th August, on BBC3; “Russell Brand: From Addiction to Recovery”),  Russell Brand launched a hard-hitting attack on conventional approaches to drug addiction: first, he lambasted the view of right wing tabloid commentators who favour the view that addicts recklessly and freely abuse drugs, and could as easily choose differently. Tragically he clearly didn’t want to die and was obviously […]

In the first seven years of your life, a concept that I prefer to call the personality is gradually created from all the beliefs gathered from experiences in those early years. Because this personality was formed from beliefs in the past, the only future it can create will always relate to the past. So it […]

Friday, April 27th, 2012

In 2008 French cardiologist Olivier Ameisen published a book, “Le Dernier Verre” (The Last Drink), about his self treatment of alcoholism using high doses of Baclofen, a drug primarily used as a muscle relaxant and an antispastic agent. This led to a short study of 132 heavy drinkers, 80% of whom showed significant improvement. This […]

Tuesday, April 10th, 2012

“I just wanted to send you a copy of a poem I wrote for my last day. I needed to prove to myself I could do it and I challenged myself to read it also without dutch courage! I am feeling very positive and hopeful. I just feel I have a new lease of life! […]

Mephedrone

Monday, March 29th, 2010

There are calls again this morning for the urgent reclassification of mephedrone.
This is a very interesting problem because it sits right on the fault line of a crucial addiction debate which we need to grasp now before it’s too late.
