Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is an exciting treatment for depression using magnets to stimulate the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex at the front of the brain which is associated with mood.
There are many good treatments for depression but often people try one or another and may become easily discouraged if it doesn’t work for them. It is therefore important to have as many different treatment options as possible and TMS is now available for people who have struggled to find a treatment that suits them.
In an independent evaluation of the effectiveness of TMS the clinical guidance organisation, NICE, found good evidence for it’s effectiveness as a treatment for depression ( https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ipg542/chapter/4-Efficacy ) NICE stated that “the Committee noted consistently positive outcomes in many studies and a good safety profile.” and “The Committee noted that commentary from patients was positive and described significant benefits to their quality of life, including the advantages, for some patients, of being able to stop the use of oral antidepressant medications.”
Although TMS is offered widely in the USA, it has been slow to be adopted here in the UK although some notable NHS research hospitals have been involved in developing protocols and adding to the body of research on its effectiveness.
Magventure, whose machine we use, were some of the original manufacturers of research machines. These well-evidenced machines have now been adapted for clinical settings making it easy to deliver sessions typically taking half an hour per session. It usually takes two weeks to report improvements and the average course of treatment is about four weeks.
Many of our clients suffer from a range of conditions so we are delighted to add this to our offerings for those who are residing with us for a month or more at Hay Farm.
Please discuss this treatment with our admissions team to ensure it will be available to you.
