Understanding Alcoholism
Alcoholism is a condition that affects people from all walks of life – regardless of their gender, social status, or background – it’s a severe condition that can have serious implications on physical and mental health, social relationships, and family dynamics.
Alcoholism goes beyond a casual drink or a way to unwind after a long day – an addiction to alcohol becomes a chronic disorder when a person becomes reliant, both physically or chemically, on alcohol in order to function or feel ‘normal’. However, this can lead to health issues, anything from liver disease to mental health conditions and even death.
The problem is that society accepts drinking alcohol, sometimes even at the binge drinking and alcohol abuse level, which rightfully causes some concern regarding where we draw the line to where drinking is enjoyed as a pass time and it becomes a full-blown addiction.
Social drinking is part of the culture in the UK – there’s no denying that – however, the lines can get blurred from time to time, and we can’t always pinpoint when there’s a problem. With that said – when alcoholism is evident or has been recognised – the social stigma attached to alcohol addiction often stands in the way of those who are searching for treatment.
For this reason, so many people suffering from alcohol use problems either deny or prolong their diagnosis through fear of social backlash from peers, even though friends and family members may have highlighted the issue in the past.
Understanding alcoholism, how it begins, or acknowledging the issue, is the pinnacle of the disease that allows those struggling with this chronic problem to reach out for help and support through the means of alcohol addiction treatment.
The Alcohol Addiction Problem in Birmingham
As a whole, the alcohol problem in the UK on a national level raises some concerns when we look at some of the data and alcohol statistics from the most recent NHS reports. Although there are various factors that contribute to the issues with alcoholism in the country, part of the problem lies in the accessibility and affordability of alcohol.
The fact that it’s readily available at supermarkets, pubs, and off-licenses means that alcohol is easily obtainable. Also, stats show that alcohol has become 72% more affordable in the UK since 1987, further exacerbating the problem of accessibility.
Regarding hospital admissions, both narrow measure and broad measure statistics are recorded; however, according to the NHS, the narrow measure data provides a more precise indication of the alcohol problem due to it being the primary reason for hospital admission – broad measures are based on secondary diagnoses linked to alcohol.
For that reason, we will only highlight narrow measures, although these figures also speak volumes about the alcohol epidemic and the burden created for our valued NHS.
Between 2019/2020, as a nation, the UK witnessed roughly 280 thousand hospital admissions – 2% higher than the previous year and 8% higher than the one before – representing a whopping 1.6% of ALL hospital admissions. The majority of these, 23% to be exact, were aged between 55 and 64, and from the total amount, 65% were male patients.
For alcohol-related prescriptions, a total of 167 thousand items were dispensed between 2020/2021 – that accumulates to 137 thousand items of Acamprosate Calcium, 28 thousand items of Disulfiram, and 1,000 items of Nalmefene. In terms of alcohol-specific deaths, that is, explicitly caused by alcohol, 8,974 were recorded in 2020 – an 18.6% increase compared with 2019 – with the main cause attributed to alcohol liver disease. But what does this look like for Birmingham?
Local Stats for Addiction in Birmingham
Hospital Admissions: Around 500-650 per 100 thousand population.
Prescriptions Dispensed: Between 100-150 per 100 thousand population.
According to the UK Government, it is estimated that roughly 13,443 people in Birmingham have an alcohol dependence problem – that’s 1.58% of the adult population. Although this may not seem like a high percentage, the numbers speak volumes about the density of the issue and raise alarms that call for the need for addiction treatment in Birmingham.

Why Choose PROMIS Instead of Alcohol Rehab in Birmingham?
Selecting PROMIS over a local alcohol rehab clinic in Birmingham is a decision that can significantly impact your recovery journey. Here are some of the reasons why our patients from areas around the UK choose us over a local drug and alcohol rehab.
- Expertise Beyond Local Scope: Our global expertise surpasses the localised focus of Birmingham rehab centres, offering broader insights into addiction treatment.
- Tranquil Retreats: The serene environments of our Kent and London locations provide a peaceful contrast to the busy streets of Birmingham, aiding in recovery.
- Personalised Care: Our treatment programmes are tailored uniquely to each individual, contrasting to the more general approach often found in some rehab centres in Birmingham.
- Comprehensive Mental Health Focus: We address not just addiction but underlying mental health issues, providing a more holistic approach than many Birmingham-based rehabs.
- Escape from Daily Triggers: Being away from familiar environments in Birmingham helps break habitual cycles of addiction.
- Family-Centric Approach: We involve families deeply in the rehab process, offering support systems that might not be as readily available in Birmingham clinics.
Each of these points is crafted to meet the needs of individuals seeking a comprehensive, compassionate, and effective approach to overcoming addiction, setting PROMIS apart as a preferred choice over local Birmingham options.
